Holes Enjoy Centre:

Location: St. Albert, Alberta,
Visit Hole’s Greenhouse and gardens website www.holesonline.com
Area: 10-acre parcel of land
Cost: $25 million
Client: Hole’s Greenhouses and Gardens Ltd., one of Canada’s largest gardening operations. Located in St. Albert, Alberta, Holes Garden centre is a familly owned business, operated by Bill and Jim Hole, carrying on the legacy of their parents, Ted and Lois Hole. Holes is considered to be the most prominent garden centre in Canada.

Direction: To relocate Hole’s to South Riel Drive on a 10-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park, overlooking Big Lake.
Project: Fitting in with the master plan, for the City of St Alberts’ sustainable mandate, Holes “next generation” is taking their garden center into the 21st century. This new “Destination Centre” not only accommodates the 3.07% per annum growth rate, but meets the anticipated tourism expansion.
Holes proposed design is at the cutting edge trend and direction for garden centers. Holes are primarily involved with gardening, however, they are transcending the traditional business model, and becoming a destination experience for the whole family, with the emphasis on reflecting, relaxing, and reconnecting. Holes “Enjoy” centre will incorporate into their growing operation: an organic super market, micro brewery, wine shop, flower shop, bakery, cafe, restaurant, retail, children’s play area, information centre and a comprehensive spa and yoga studio. Thus accommodating the whole family.
The initial design is a blend of masculine, feminine, contemporary, traditional, form and formless. The contemporary crystalline green houses with their masculine linear structure, juxtapose and embedded in the curvilinear solidity of the feminine contours makes for an exciting fusion in architecture. Merging a selection of sustainable building techniques and interior finishes, both traditional and innovative, will not only support sustainable design, but educate and inspire, both visitors and staff alike.
